Dominique Tomarchio
How did you get in to PR?
I first decided to get into PR when I was working part-time whilst still in school and an older co-worker was studying and working in communications. Her job intrigued me to the point that I made PR the focus of my year 11 and 12 subject selection process. Once graduating from high-school I studied a Bachelor of Arts in Public Communications at UTS and completed an internship at a PR agency, solidifying my love for the industry.

What do you love most about the job?
I love being able to achieve results for clients and also have the ability to spread great news about their products or service. It’s especially rewarding when a client has never used PR before in their marketing mix and…Link

Plug your Business! – Steve Weber List Price $29.15 (www.dymocks.com.au)
Working in a PR agency, we know that there are a number of cost-effective ways to communicate a brand message to consumers, without having to pay for extensive advertising or expensive marketing tools.

In his latest book, ‘Plug Your Business’, Steve Webber talks about how to use both traditional and non-traditional marketing strategies to reach a target audience. The majority of his tips focus on how to create marketing that every business wants, but finds hard to attain – word of mouth marketing, buzz, viral marketing. He suggests doing this through the use of free social media tools such as Twitter, MySpace, Facebook, Google Analytics, blogs and other Web 2.0 networks.

An interesting point presented in the book: with traditional marketing (cold-calling etc), the average response rate was around 2%, however with social networking sites the response rate can be 80% or more.

It’s a relatively short book with concise and easy-to-read points on how to grow your business – a great read.
